I had attended a "Bellynisian" workshop and had some concerns over what was taught.

The teacher of the workshop stated "the Tahitian rythums have no names"

Leo Hone

The paintings of Hawai'i artist (from 1970 -1979), Shari
Keleohoneakekahuli Martens Magno, are hanging in many countries
throughout the world, among them Denmark, England, Australia, Germany
and Canada. While painting was her first love, music became equally
important. Two years after the Alberta government aired a documentary
on her work as an artist, she laid aside her career in painting to
pursue musical studies. Artist and musician, Leohone holds a Master of
Arts degree from Norwich University in Vermont and a Fellowship degree
in Organ Performance from Trinity College of Music, London, England.
From 1982 onwards, she performed organ recitals extensively across
Canada and the Western U.S. until she retired from the concert scene
to Hawaii in 1989. Once settled, she inevitably found her way back to
her first love and has answered her call to paint.

Leohone is the hanai daughter of Paulie Keakealani Jennings, Executive
Producer of the World Invitational Hula Festival, E Ho'i Mai I Ka Pika
Hula. She is presently the Organist/Choirmaster at St. Peter's
Episcopal Church in downtown Honolulu and the Choral Director for the
Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club Chorale. She paddles with Anuenue
Canoe Club in Waikiki.

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.

For those who appreciate hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his
talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance.

New Hula Le'a Class Starting on Thursday nights

First class on June 1st, 7-9 pm

Dancers of all levels are invited to attend the Academy's newest hula class for adults, Hula Le'a, starting Thursday, June 1st from 7-9pm. Due to an overwhelming number of requests for a weeknight class that focuses less on stage performances and more on hula for recreation, the Hula Le'a (meaning fun or light-hearted) class was formed.

While some dance or hula experience is likely necessary to keep up with the instruction by Kumu Hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, anyone interested is encouraged to attend and try out the class. More information about this new class can be found at AHA's website.

Enrollment Requirements:
To enroll at AHA, prospective students must do the following:

1) complete the enrollment form (available on AHA's website);
2) review the AHA member policies (also available on AHA's website);
3) pay a $25 enrollment fee and the first month's dues (checks should be made payable to: Academy of Hawaiian Arts, Inc.);
4) purchase two AHA t-shirts at $25 a pair.

Studio Location:
The Academy studio is located at 10700 MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, in the Foothill Square Shopping Center. The studio is behind the former Albertson's supermarket.

The 43rd Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival takes place from April 16 - 22, 2006, at the Edith Kanaka'ole Tennis Stadium in Hilo, Hawai'i

The Competition dates are: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 20, 21, and 22, 2006

* Thursday, April 20, 2006, is the Miss Aloha Hula competition
* Friday, April 21, 2006, is the Group, Hula Kahiko competition
* Saturday, April 22, 2006, is the Group, Hula `Auana competition

A week-long festival of cultural events including Hawaii's most
prestigious hula competition at Edith Kanaka`ole Stadium, the Merrie Monarch festival begins with a Ho`olaule'a on Moku Ola (Coconut Island) on Easter Sunday in Hilo with lots of music, food and fun. On Wednesday April 19, 2006, there is a free hula exhibition night at the stadium that begins at 6:30 pm.; Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula competition; Friday and Saturday are the group Kahiko (ancient) and 'Auana (modern) hula competitions. A grand parade winds through Hilo-town on Saturday morning.

Kim Taylor Reece, Winner of the PIFA (Pacific Islander Festival
Association) 2005 Artist of the Year Award at the San Diego Pacific
Islander Festival.

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.

For those who appreciate hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his
talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance.

Where: We will START & END at the U.N. PLAZA (corner of 8th/market)
next to water fountain.

March Route: March across 7th street, march across Market on 7th
(right side of street) head toward mission - gather in front of 9th
circuit (Gathering Point #1) - go through our mele and then continue
our march. March across Mission, make a right - cross 7th and head
straight on mission (left side of mission), Make a right at 8th street
(right side of street) head to Market. Make a right at market and
gather (Gathering Point #2), go through our mele and then head to 7th
again. Cross 7th street back to U.N. Plaza. We need help from the kane
(men) ages 30-40 to be at all of the intersections helping us abide by
the traffic lights. We will not leave anybody behind and will wait for
everybody to gather before we resume (we are not in a rush –
safety first)

Parking: Please plan ahead for parking – Mission St. Garage
(between 4th/5th)

BART: The "Civic Center" station for BART and Muni will get you to
Market and 8th -- walk west one block (up market) to the U.N. Plaza.

What: Protest march and rally in support of Kamehameha schools and all
things Hawaiian. – Organized Speeches/March/Pule/Oli. This is not
a show/performance - the mele/oli/hula are meant for unification.

Gentle but important reminder: We would like to have a pono march.
Please keep signage to slogans such as "Education for Hawaiians,"
"Justice for Hawaiians," "Hawaiian Unity," and the like. We will have
flyers from the Kamehameha Schools with educational information about
the admissions policy as well as historic information on Hawaii to
hand out to media and interested passersby.

What to Wear: Red/Black clothing (kihei/pareo/shirt etc..) bring
banners/signs (no racist comments please), there will be "Ku i Ka
Pono" shirts for purchase $10-15 (limited supply)., this event is
meant to unify - please wear prescribed prescribed colors to show
unity

The 4th Annual "Las Vegas Pure Aloha Festival 2005" was presented in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Cannery Casino on April 9th & 10th 2005.

Once again a special Mahalo to "Escolta Fine Arts" for making this

OPEN ENROLLMENT IN JANUARY!

Open enrollment for new students at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts (AHA) begins Saturday, January 8, 2005.

AHA currently offers hula classes for adults and for children (keiki) in Oakland, California. The class for new adult students is on Saturday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm; please check the AHA website at www.academyofhawaiianarts.org for information about keiki classes, and for registration procedures, class fees, and AHA policies.

Adult classes are divided into beginning, intermediate, advanced and professional levels. Every new Academy student (regardless of past experience) starts at the beginning level and advances at the recommendation of AHA Kumu Hula and instructors.

"Ho'okahi" was presented at the Kofman Auditorim at the Historic Alameda High School in Alameda CA on November 21, 2004 by the Academy of Hawaiian Arts-http://academyofhawaiianarts.org. This event was a presentation of dance, chant, and song by keiki, wahine, and kane under the direction of Kumu Hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu and Kumu Hula Renee Ku'uleinani Price.
